How to Make Sure Your Thrifted Treasure is Pest-Free
So you’re willing to take the risk. Fair enough. But let’s be smart about it.
- Inspect it like a detective. Get a flashlight. Check every crack, every joint, every hidden spot. Bugs love to stay out of sight.
- Quarantine it. Before it even touches your floor, let it sit in the garage, on a porch, or anywhere that isn’t inside your home. Give it a few days. See if anything crawls out.
- Heat or freeze it. Extreme temperatures kill most pests. If you can, expose it to high heat (120°F or more) or freeze it for a few days.
- Vacuum like your life depends on it. Get every crevice, every corner. Use a HEPA filter to trap anything microscopic.
- Treat it. If you’re worried, don’t wait. Insecticides for wood-boring pests, steam treatments for bed bugs—do what needs to be done.
- Refinish or seal it. A fresh coat of varnish or paint can help keep future pests at bay.
