Engaging with hobbies with your children as a family can be a great way to help you all connect and spend time together and learn something new in the process. Hobbies are essential for any reason, but they can also be a catalyst for people to connect and share a common interest in each other’s company. If you are looking for something you can do as a family and make into a habit or a new family tradition, these choices can be just what you are looking for.

1. Cooking

Cooking is a vital life skill, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be a fun hobby to try to do together. Start small with age-appropriate choices, then build up to more complex recipes and different methods of cooking; for example, start your baking experience by making cookies and muffins before progressing to homemade sourdough bread, or you can start learning how to grill for the perfect BBQ foods before moving onto smoking different meats and the art of broiling perhaps.

2. Yoga

Yoga is the perfect way to stretch your body and wind down at the end of the day. Making yoga part of your daily routine can give you something to do as a family before bedtime and help to ensure everyone is moving their bodies correctly and supporting their physical health, as well as taking time to decompress and put themselves in a better position to relax. Even at a young age, toddlers and babies can participate with you even if they’re not doing the poses as such, more just copying you. In general, yoga for kids is absolutely possible and it’s something kids can quickly fall in love with too! Then as they get older, they learn more poses and techniques as well as the correct breathing for maximum yoga benefits.

3. Photography

Cameras are a dime a dozen these days, with most devices and cell phones having one integrated, plus there is a range of child-friendly cameras on the market suitable for little hands to use. While children don’t necessarily need to know the ins and outs of what makes a good photo or how to get the correct exposure for a shot in the beginning, helping them to take pictures and get snap happy can be a basis for the beginning of a great family hobby, you can do together and explore. Plus, you can take pictures anywhere and everywhere, meaning you can practice in many different places and do a range of activities or do nothing at all!

4. Art

Art is subjective and can be carried out in many different mediums, making it the perfect hobby for families to incorporate into their day. Whether you simply run riot with the finger paints or practice with a different technique every week, popping balloons filled with paint onto large sheets of paper, anyone? Let your imagination run free, and see what creative ways you can come up with to express yourself in this creative manner.

5. Board Games

Board games can be so much fun unless you are uber-competitive, then you might want to steer clear. But with so many different games to try out, why not pick one or two nights per week where someone chooses a different game, and you spend some time competing against each other? Not only is this fun. You are building vital skills like critical thinking, communication, and teamwork at the same time too.

6. Treasure Hunts

Treasure hunts can be a fun way to burn off some energy and put those inquisitive minds to good use, especially for little ones. And the beauty is that you can tailor the theme to any theme or difficulty level as your kids develop and get older. They can even take charge of creating them too. You can do treasure hunts at home, in the garden, or at your local park, or participate in community hunts and trials looking for different plants, wildlife, and more. Then as they get older, you can visit escape rooms, go to mazes, or take part in geocaching too.

7. Gardening

Lastly, gardening can be a great way to improve your garden at home and spend time together while learning valuable skills. Start small with a little herb garden or indoor potted plants, for example. Then work your way up to flower beds, fruits, vegetables, and more. Even if you know nothing about gardening yourself, you can all learn together and develop the skills needed to cultivate a horticultural delight at home.

Everyone needs a hobby in their life, and while there are thousands of options, being able to start one as a family that everyone can join in with and benefit from can help you all become closer and develop your family traditions going forward. Let’s not forget the memories you will be making that you can treasure throughout the years too!
