Have you heard the saying, “being at the wrong place at the wrong time?” Well, that’s not what happened to me. Lol I was at the right place at the right time. There’s a lady by the name of Megan that runs a podcast, and she was looking for guests to speak about race in America. I just happened to be scrolling through her lovely facebook group when I saw a LIVE session and then a post looking for people to share their story. REALLY? REALLY? Hmmmm…..let’s do this! I’ve wanted to talk about racial discrimination for a while.
I remember responding and then receiving an email to schedule a time to record. When I first looked at the dates and times available I had to step back and get my life together. Why? She’s on the East Coast, and I’m in Hawaii. There’s a six-hour time difference. There was NO way I was doing a 3 a.m. recording. So, I took the 8 a.m. recording, but that was cutting close to getting the kids to school and back home.
A few days prior, I ensured my mic worked fine, and everything was set up just right.  The night before, I told the kids to have their butts together and ready to walk out the door a little earlier than usual. This was business, and no one has time for excuses about why I’m late.
Let’s Do This!
It’s the morning of the recording. I got everyone dropped off, home to grab my coffee and sat down at my computer ready to record. Checked out the mic one more time and checked out the headphones to ensure I could hear her. I tested the earphones with a youtube video. Things were great, and it’s show time! I logged into the recording and was ready. Megan popped up on the screen, and I could see her mouth moving, but couldn’t hear a word. WHHAAATTTT???!!!! Yo, I thought she was playing a prank on me. She could hear me, but I couldn’t hear her. Yes, I panicked. Pure pandemonium set in. This was my first podcast, and I’m going to ruin this opportunity to share my story.
I could see her laughing at me as I ran around the room and then the house. YES, I was running around the house, screaming for my hubby to help me (he was off that day). Finally, I calmed down and figured out my problem. Yeah, I needed to select a hearing source. Apparently, when hooked with the mic and outside of youtube, I had to do this. But, anywho….Take a listen to what we discussed.
Have you encountered racial discrimination? Are you comfortable having race discussions with others?
