Living in a cluttered environment is something that many people just get used to. It becomes a normal part of life, and something to be expected.

But what if there was a way to sort it out?

That’s where this post can help. In this guide, we look through some of the ways to deal with a cluttered home and make it feel less overwhelming.

Here’s everything you need to know:

Start With A Plan

The first thing to do is to start with a plan. You want to figure out what you’re going to do with all the clutter before you tackle it head-on.

Most people divide their homes into zones and tackle each section at a time. This approach reduces the risk of burnout and makes it more likely that every section of the property will get some assistance.

Usually, breaking things up into bite-sized chunks is beneficial. It reduces stress and makes it more manageable.

Use Four-Box Methods

During this process, you’ll want to use the four-box method. The idea here is to put all your items into one of four boxes, depending on what you want to do with them. The four boxes are:

  • Trash
  • Sell
  • Keep
  • Donate

Which of these four boxes you fall into depends on what you want from each item. Usually, you’ll be throwing out quite a lot, but you might want to pass on other items if you think other people will find them valuable.

If your keep pile is growing quickly, then you might consider putting some of your belongings into storage. This way, you can hang onto the things you feel you need, but you don’t necessarily have to keep them in your home. Just be sure to store your items in good-quality storage bins while they are in storage.

Follow The 80-20 Rule

You’ll also want to follow the 80-20 rule as you’re going through all your items. This states that you only want to keep the 20% of items that you actually use regularly and discard the rest.

The 80-20 rule is something that shows up repeatedly in life but it is valuable when it comes to sorting out your home. If you’re not using something, it encourages you to really think about whether you need it and the function it is serving in your life

Digitize Your Paper Clutter

Another technique is to digitize all your paper clutter. Instead of keeping files everywhere around the house, you can remove them and put them on a hard drive instead. This approach can save you an enormous amount of space, all without you having to lose anything or give up all your documentation.

Remove Sentimental Items Last

Don’t focus on your sentimental items from the get-go as this approach could derail you. Instead, focus on these items last and keep them to the end. For example, you could hang onto some heirlooms and photos. Usually, you will have more space for these since you’ve cleared out so many other items from your home, allowing you to keep more of them and making the whole process more enjoyable.
